 New Year’s resolutions were usually a joke in my house. I would often sit on the couch while saying, “My resolution this year is to eat healthy and lose 25 pounds,” all the while eating ice cream straight out of the carton with a spoon the size of Rhode Island. Maybe you can relate.

What was wrong? Should I have stopped making resolutions? Was I simply pretending I was going to change my ways as the new year rolled around?

My answer is an emphatic NO! New Year’s resolutions can be a great idea. The new year always brings hope of improvement. But we have to do resolutions right or else they become a running gag throughout the year. A better word for resolution is “goal.” Now, instead of “New Year’s resolutions,” I call them “New Year’s goals”—and that gets me on the right track.
